Lots of families have one. That small, unremarkable thing you do on repeat, week after week, that somehow becomes the thing you’d fight hardest to keep.
For us, it’s Friday pizza night.
How It Started
It began when the kids were small, if we’re honest, more out of survival than tradition! Friday evening, end of a long week, nobody with the energy for anything complicated. Pizza bases and a jar of sauce were the easiest dinner we could put in front of everyone — so that’s what we did.
There was no plan for it to become a “thing.” It just kept happening. And somewhere along the way, it turned into the one part of the week nobody wants to miss.
What It Actually Looks Like
Nothing fancy. No added jobs, no added pressure.
Bases and sauce on the counter, everyone picking their own toppings. A bag of O’Donnells Crisps opened while we’re making it and waiting for it to cook. Amble’s playlist on in the background — it’s been the Friday favourite for quite some time now. A few minutes in the oven, then everyone piles onto the couch for a movie.
That’s it. That’s the whole tradition.
Why It Matters More Than It Looks
It’s not really about the pizza.
It’s the cosiness of it. The sense of home. The ease — and the ease is not to be underestimated. After a full week of school runs, work, and everything in between, it’s not just the kids who need that lower-effort, lower-stakes evening. Parents need it too.
It marks the end of one week and the gentle start of the next — a small full stop before the busyness of the weekend begins.
The Bigger Lesson
Our kids have said, more than once, that they never want Friday pizza night to stop. And when we think ahead to when they’re older, busier, and not around as much, we know these are the evenings we’ll look back on.
It’s a good reminder that family life doesn’t need to be big or elaborate to matter. It’s not the grand days out or the special occasions that quietly build a childhood — more often, it’s the small things repeated on purpose. The people, showing up for each other, week after week.
