Easing Into January: A Gentle Family Reset

The start of a new year can feel like a breath of

The start of a new year can feel like a breath of fresh air, offering a chance to refresh your home and routines. But for many families, the idea of a “New Year reset” can be daunting. At A Good Moment Company, they believe January should be about small, meaningful steps that fit into your family’s rhythm—no pressure, no overwhelm, just calm progress.

Jenny Douglas, Founder of A Good Moment Company, shares some of her top tips for families.

Here’s how to ease into 2025 with a family-friendly approach to organisation:

Start with Small Wins
Rather than trying to transform your entire home, focus on bite-sized tasks everyone can tackle:

 Clear the remaining Christmas Clutter: You’ve probably already tidied away all the decorations and the tree, but it’s worth doing one final sweep of all the rooms to ensure nothing has been forgotten. If you’ve come across any decorations that were broken or ones you didn’t particularly like this year,
declutter them now so you don’t have to deal with them next time you’re packing everything away.

 Toy Tidy-Up: Work with your children to sort through their toys. Encourage them to pick a few they’ve outgrown to donate. This teaches generosity while making space for the new.

Small wins like these help build confidence and create visible results, motivating the whole family.

Create Family Zones
Turn high-traffic areas into functional, family-friendly spaces:

 Homework or Craft Station: Dedicate a corner with tidy storage for supplies, making after-school time more productive.

 Relaxation Spot: Set up a cosy reading nook with cushions and blankets for quiet moments.

By giving each space a purpose, your home feels more intentional and less chaotic.

Set Easy Family Routines
Simple systems make it easier to maintain an organised home:

 The 10-Minute Tidy: Pick a time each day when everyone spends 10 minutes tidying their own space. Make it fun by playing music or turning it into a friendly competition.

 The One-Basket Rule: Keep a “catch-all” basket in shared spaces. At the end of the day, work together to return items to their proper homes.

These routines keep clutter at bay without feeling like a chore.

Reflect Together
As the new year begins, involve the whole family in setting intentions for your home:

 Ask questions like, “What do you love about our home?” or “What could we improve together?”

 Create a shared list of goals, such as “Keep the playroom tidy” or “Spend more time outdoors.”

This makes organising a shared responsibility and encourages teamwork.

Celebrate the Journey
It’s important to recognise and celebrate progress, no matter how small:

 Take “before and after” photos of decluttered spaces to see the transformation.

 Reward milestones, like a tidy playroom, with a family treat—perhaps a movie night where they get to stay up a bit later!

Every step forward is worth celebrating.

Step Into 2025 With Intention
Easing into January doesn’t mean striving for perfection—it’s about making your home a place that supports your family’s needs and values. Whether it’s creating a calming reading nook, simplifying your daily routines, or making room for more connection, small changes lead to lasting impact.

Let this be the year you welcome more good moments into your home—one step,
one smile, one space at a time.
