Curraghmore House & Gardens (35 minute drive) is the spectacular home of the 9th Marquis of Waterford and his ancestors since 1170. An impressive 1,000 acres of formal gardens, woodland and grazing fields and Ireland’s largest private demesne is situated near Portlaw. Discover the historic grounds from a Sitka spruce planted on the estate in the 1830s, now one of the tallest trees in Ireland and stands guard over King John’s Bridge, which was built in 1205. Visitors can take a guided tour of Curraghmore House, detailing the house and family history, viewing the original interior including a vast furniture and art collection.
From the world-renowned Mount Congreve Gardens (25 minute drive), that includes around 70 acres of planted woodlands, their garden wall and several stunning walkways. Boasting one of the largest private collections of plants globally and described as ‘A Great Garden of the World’, the entire collection features plants from every continent. Mount Congreve House, home to six generations of Congreves, was built in 1760 by the celebrated local architect John Roberts who was also responsible for the magnificent design of the original Faithlegg mansion.
