Traveling abroad with young children can be a delightful adventure with the right preparation. Yes, it does take a lot of preparation to make it as stress free as possible, but the memories will be always worth it. Here are some essential tips from Kathleen Scully, Child Sleep Consultant and Founder of Happy Sleep Solutions, to prepare for a smooth and enjoyable journey with your babies and toddlers.
1. Sunshade for Your Pram
Protecting your little ones from the harsh summer sun is crucial. A sunshade that attaches to your pram can provide much-needed UV protection. This not only keeps your baby safe from harmful rays but also ensures they can nap comfortably on the go or while you’re enjoying the beach. Choose a sunshade that is both safe and breathable to maximize your child’s comfort. Naps on the go, while on holidays may mean you can do and see more, or sit an enjoy a cocktail by the pool, all while baby naps.
2. Baby Carrier
Invest in a baby carrier for hands-free travel with your little one. This is perfect for managing multiple children or carrying hand luggage. A baby carrier is also ideal for navigating airports, especially during layovers and connecting flights.
3. Pack Smart and Light
When traveling with babies and toddlers, it’s tempting to pack everything you might need. However, try to pack only the essentials to avoid being weighed down. Opt for lightweight clothing, travel-sized toiletries, and compact gear. Remember, many destinations have stores where you can purchase necessities if needed and you can also get laundry done if needed.
4. Bring Comfort from Home
Don’t forget to pack your child’s favourite teddy or comforter. Familiar objects can help them feel more at ease in a new environment, providing a sense of security and reducing stress. A familiar bedtime story book can also help with sticking to your normal bedtime routine.
5. Portable White Noise Machine
Pack a portable white noise machine that can be easily used wherever you go. If you are all sharing a room, you are at risk of waking the baby or toddler when you are moving around or putting older children to bed. This can help block out some noise and help babies sleep better.
6. Baby-Friendly Mosquito Patches & Mosquito Net for Your Pram
You may do more on the go naps while on holiday or your baby may be out sleeping at dinner in the buggy. Stick-on mosquito patches provide protection without harsh chemicals, ideal for outings and adventures with your little ones. Keep pesky bugs away with a mosquito net that fits over your pram, perfect for peaceful nights and worry-free dinners outdoors.
7. Formula Feeding and Sterilising
Bring enough ready-made formula and bottles for the journey, plus extras for delays. Consider a portable steriliser and sterilising tablets for on-the-go sterilisation if you are travelling long haul. Disposable compostable bibs are a convenient option for less washing while on holiday.
8. Travel Essentials
Invest in a travel highchair harness to turn any chair into a safe seat for your little one. Bring lots of snacks and food pouches for long-haul flights, as pre-booked baby food may take time to be served. Attachable spoons for food pouches can be handy and save space.
9. Maintain a Routine
While it’s difficult to stick to your home routine while traveling, maintaining some consistency can help your child adjust. Try to keep nap times, and bedtimes as regular as possible. A familiar schedule can provide comfort and reduce fussiness. If you want your child to be able to have a later bedtime than at home add in an extra nap. If your toddler or preschooler has dropped their nap I would add this back in while on holiday and adjust bedtime.
10. Be Flexible
Traveling with babies and toddlers often means things won’t always go as planned. Be flexible and patient and allow extra time for everything from airport security to sightseeing. The day of travel can be the hardest and may clash with nap or bedtimes, try not to panic. On the first day of your holiday I would get right back on track with naps and an age appropriate amount of sleep. Don’t worry about where they sleep (cot, buggy, carrier), once they are getting enough all will settle in a day or two.
11. Handling Time Zone Changes
Time zone changes can be tough on little ones. The best approach is to get on the new time zone as soon as you land. Adjust meal times, nap times, and bedtimes to local time immediately to help your child acclimate quickly.
With these tips in mind, you’re well on your way to a fun and memorable summer trip abroad with your babies and toddlers. Happy travels!
