Ever stumbled upon an old photo and felt that instant jolt of nostalgia? Along with childhood toys that they loved, I believe family pictures of the everyday are a treasure to help bring back memories and feelings of a time long ago that can be fuzzy.
Childhood memories fade, and photos help them last
You know how it goes, one moment you’re holding your baby in your arms, and the next they’re racing around the house asking impossible questions, one last glass of water at 10pm and leaving toy trails behind them. Childhood is full of fleeting seasons, and as parents, we often wonder: will they remember any of this?
The truth is, they might not remember every detail. But family photos, especially the unposed and honest kind, have the magical ability to bring those days back to life. They’re not just keepsakes for us, they’re windows into a world they once lived in. Their favourite pyjamas, the dog who always shared their bed,
the way dad would turn teeth brushing into a dance party every night… all those tiny, seemingly ordinary things become irreplaceable memories.

A time capsule of real life
I’m a documentary family photographer, which means I focus on the genuine, everyday moments. Forget stiff poses, matching outfits, and smiles that hurt your cheeks. I come into your home and simply witness. And in doing so, I help create a time capsule of what life really looked and felt like.
These aren’t just pretty pictures for the wall : they’re your family, in the raw, beautiful truth of who you are together, of your unique family dynamics. They’re a record of messy kitchens filled with giggles, sleepy cuddles on the couch, spontaneous dance parties, and chocolate-smeared faces at snack time. One day,
these images will mean the world to your child, because they’ll remind them where they come from, and how deeply they were loved. Being carefree is one of the best feeling a child can experience, and photos are often the way to experience it again.
The most personal gift you can give
Toys break, clothes are outgrown, and decade trends fade. But a photo of your child sitting on your lap while you read their favourite book? (Yeah, the one you hate now that you’ve had to read it 174 times, that’s the one I’m talking about) That never loses its magic. These images become part of your family’s
narrative. They can be held, passed down, revisited when times are tough, or simply enjoyed together when you want to take a walk down memory lane.
I always say: family photos are the only gift that grows in value over time. As children grow older, they’ll return to these pictures again and again, to remember what their bedroom looked like, to see how Mama laughed, or how Papa always left a cold cup of coffee sitting on some table.

Proof of belonging
One of the most powerful things documentary photos offer is a sense of belonging. We live in a digital age where images are everywhere, but few are as personal and grounding as real family moments. When children look back at their photos, they don’t just see themselves, they see love. They see connection. They see a home that may look different now, but once held their whole world. These images reassure them: I belonged, I was safe, I was cherished.
And right now, when your kids see photos of them displayed in the home, they feel seen and loved. It’s a quiet but powerful way to say, « You matter. I love you, always and no matter what. » Seeing a framed photo of you and them means everything will be alright.
Everyday moments are the most meaningful
You don’t need a perfect house or a special occasion to take meaningful photos. Some of the most touching images I’ve ever made were captured while a Mama was wiping mud off her toddler’s face, or when a child peeked through the curtains, playing hide and seek and giggling while their Papa was pretending he couldn’t see them.
It’s in the quiet, often overlooked routines that we find the most connection, and that’s what documentary photography is all about. When you look back in 10, 20, or 30 years, these are the moments you’ll be so glad to have preserved.

Family photos make the best keepsake, for them, not just you
As parents, we often think of family photos as something for us to hold onto. And they are. But even more so, they’re for your children. They’re the stories they’ll share one day with their own kids. They’re the proof of how loved and cared for they were. They’re heirlooms.
You might remember flipping through albums as a child, seeing your bedroom wallpaper, your favourite stuffed animal, your parent’s hairstyle in the 80s. Weren’t those images precious? That’s exactly what your kids will feel when they look at the photos you take today.
You don’t need to “be photogenic”
A final note, especially for the parents who feel unsure about being in the frame: you don’t need to look perfect. In fact, your kids don’t want perfect. They want you, as you are. Showing up in photos is a gift to your children. It tells them: “I was there, I loved you deeply, and we had a life together worth remembering.” As a mother, I know how often we’re the ones behind the camera, taking care of the memories, only to realise we’re barely in any of them. Let’s fix that : we work hard to make the everyday magic happen, and we deserve this. You deserve this. You are enough.
So get in the frame. Let someone else hold the camera. The way your child sees you is already beautiful.(Read more about how to make sure Moms exist in pictures READ HERE

A keepsake that grows with them
– Documentary family photos freeze time in a way nothing else can.
– They help your children remember, feel, and reconnect with their childhood.
– They offer comfort, identity, and proof of a life filled with love.
– And the best part? You don’t have to do anything special, just be yourselves.
Whether you work with a photographer or grab your phone during everyday moments, don’t underestimate the power of preserving the now. It may not seem like much today, but one day, these moments will be the treasure they hold closest to their heart.
