Description
Derrycassin Wood is a stunningly scenic woods located on the shores of Lough Gowna in Dring, County Longford. The forest covers an area of 179 acres and consists many trails throughout. Signposting at the entrance to the woods outlines the various routes but you can always make it up as you go along and explore!
Start & finish:
The car park at Mullinalaghta GAA pitch. Just pop “Derrycassin Woods” into google maps and it will take you straight there!
Distance:
We walked approximately 5km
Time:
Took us about an hour and a half with our exploring and photos (of course)
Suitability:
Easy. No special equipment required. Ground is quite muddy during the winter/wet months.
We walked the white route which takes you through the woodlands along the lough. There are picnic benches and benches dotted throughout the area.
The area is very well kept, peaceful and scenic. It’s perfect for families (although buggies / wheelchairs are probably not ideal if it has been raining). The Forrest paths are gravel littered in leaves at this time of year. There is plenty to explore and the perfect escape for a few hours (if within your 5km, currently)
