Description
Location: Tinahely Railway Walk, (near Aughrim) Co. Wicklow ( a large orange sign posted at the Top Garage as you enter Tinahely)
Parking: Small car park at the starting point
Path: Linear (2km) Gravel path running alongside the river (boulders at the start meaning we had to lift the buggy over them)
Facilities: Picnic tables and benches at the car park and along the walk
Features: Tomnafinnoge Woods (at the other end of the walk)
This walk took 1 hour to complete out and back, including time taken for photos and of course observing our surroundings. The path is gravelly so not suitable for scooters. Also those a bit tentative on bikes might need some assistance navigating the number of tree roots sprouting up along the path.
This walk runs parallel to the Derry River and at times is quite exposed so extra care with wandering children is needed here. Finally the starting point at Kilcommon Bridge is marked by four large rocks. The gap for buggies/wheelchairs is not wide enough at all so we had to lift ours over them. This is not ideal and hopefully will be rectified in the future. Otherwise a truly magical walk, worth the journey and getting lost!
Thankfully the drive home was much quicker as we took a more direct route through Aughrim and Rathdrum, on into Wicklow Town. Here we stopped off in Phil Healy’s Pub/The Dairy for our dinner. This venue was buggy friendly, with highchairs and a kiddies menu available, served fabulous food with a very friendly service. Certainly worth the visit.
There are more walks to explore in Wicklow so we look forward to our next adventure there.
