Books, Patrick's Day

Irish Books to Celebrate this Saint Patrick’s Day

There are lots of wonderful books to choose from, and we wanted

There are lots of wonderful books to choose from, and we wanted to share some favourites:

🌿Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler’s ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ translated by @futafata … ‘Mo Theachín gan Chuma gan Chaoi’. The illustrations are the same as the English version and the Irish rhyming is done so well, keeps the same fantastic rhythm and repetition.

🌿‘Is Geal Liom Sibh Go Léir’ is a lovely translation from @bigpicturebooks and @forasnagaeilge .. a translation of the gorgeous ‘You‘re All My Favourites’ by Sam McBrartney and Anita Jeram. If you don’t know this story, it’s well worth checking out in both languages .. a gorgeous story about 3 bears wondering who Mamaí Béar agus Daidí Béar love the most! ..gorgeous for bedtime.

🌿‘Ababú, a Ghúgaí!’ is the wonderful ‘Oh no, George!’ By @chrishaughton We’ve a full review of this done in English, and it’s just as good as Gaeilge! Another wonderful translation from Gabriel Rosenstock, @bigpicturebooks@forasnagaeilge

🌿Percy Péacóg is an original Irish book written by Gemma Breathnach, illustrated by Tarsila and published by @futafata It tells the tale of a shy peacock who doesn’t want to be noticed … until his bravery and friendship change all that. This is a wonderful story and there is some gorgeous vocabulary in it. This would be a lovely book for all families, but especially families who have some knowledge of Irish already.

🌿The next two books (@futafata) are suitable for younger kids and for families looking to start out reading Irish books. ‘Babaí Cathal Am Dul a Luí’ is a flap book which adds an extra element of fun! ‘Cloisim Rud Eigín’, written by Tadhg MacDhonnagáin and illustrated by Steve Simpson, is a short, simple one about the tiogár Dainín.
They repeat simple phrases throughout and give children the opportunity to repeatedly hear or say an initial phrase and then change the noun at the end. A fantastic way to learn a language and gives the children the opportunity to begin to speak it themselves.

🌿Check out @futafata for more including @oliverjeffers and Diary of a Wimpy Kid!
